Aylings was founded in 1859 as an rowing oar and scull manufacturer. After quickly gaining a reputation for excellence it was awarded a Royal Warrant. In the 1980s production began on Aylings Racing Boats, supplying boats to crews of all levels, ranging from schools and university teams up to World and Olympic class competitors. The boats were the preferred choice of Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent through the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. The Ayling name featured family members Richard Ayling and Astrid Ayling which represented Great Britain at the Montreal (1976), Moscow (1980) and Los Angeles (1984) Olympics respectively. Aylings as a boat builder was sold to Lola Group in 2001.
